LFL’s production of Legacy of Light marks the Louisville premiere of a script that is a luminous exploration of women scientists intertwined with the expanding definition of motherhood, which was originally commissioned by Arena Stage in Washington DC.  DC Theatre Scene declared, “Zacarias, doing her finest writing to date…equates the laws of physical science with human love and uses magical realism in some dreamlike moments to draw together her serendipitous stories.” Bringing this script to Louisville, states production director Kathi E.B. Ellis, “lives into our mission of lifting up under-heard voices, we are proud to produce a script that brings to light an oft-forgotten woman scientist, Emilie du Châtelet, and also opens up a discussion of the challenging decisions involved in surrogate pregnancies.”

LFL company founders Shannon Woolley Allison and Trina Fischer anchor the acting company playing roles in both the present and the 18th century. They are joined by company member Karole Spangler in the role of du Châtelet and Clint Gill, returning to the LFL stage, in the role of Voltaire. LFL newcomers Michael Hutchins and Stephen Peterson round out the time-hopping cast, both also playing roles in both time periods. Designers committed to the production include company members Jill Marie Schierbaum and Holly Stone as scenic designers, and frequent collaborator John Newman as lighting designer.

As part of this premiere, LFL is partnering with the Rauch Planetarium for a fundraising reception on Friday, October 14 at the Planetarium. Attendees will be entertained with astronomical images projected during the event and with a brief preview of the production.
