Two teachers. Two races. One job at risk.
One friendship rocked to the core.

With a clever riff on the ballad “You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught” from “South Pacific”, Cheryl L. Davis’ fascinating Carefully Taught focuses on an African American and a White schoolteacher whose friendship and lives are affected when racial issues are brought to light at their school, attracting both the media and politics to the crisis. Davis has written a searing and clever analysis of racial biases, personal and systemic, which drops her 21st century audience into navigating the fallout from systemic racism and the insidious cost that internal biases mete out between friends and in professional relationships. This play is intriguing and ingenious, with many moments of humour, as it courageously explores these deeply intractable issues. As the playwright says, “This provocative tale challenges us to examine our perceptions of race in contemporary culture.”

Looking for Lilith kicks off its 2017-2018 season with a regional premiere of this brand new play which debuted in Brooklyn in the fall of 2015. A Queen’s Gazette review of the premiere states, “It leaves us asking questions about loyalty and what fosters prejudice.” LFL’s production is only the second production of Carefully Taught, and reunites production director Kathi E.B. Ellis with playwright Davis, whose work, Color of Justice, she directed for the Juneteenth Legacy Theatre.

Following the Fall 2015 original Prevailing Winds, LFL’s commitment to Carefully Taught expands its engagement with issues of racial justice, including a new partnership with the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, Talk-backs and other community engagement activities in relation to Carefully Taught and LFL's Racial Justice Initiative are being organized; information will be posted here and on social media.
