ENSEMBLE NOTES

It’s not often that you’ll find a group of people that really resonate with you. People that share the same struggles and insecurities about their future. People whom you are able to cry in front of and speak out the words you never have before. People who make you feel seen and will hold your hand in a moment of anxiety. And yet somehow, every summer during those three weeks of July it feels as though that is exactly the type of people you get to meet. A group that has known each other for such a small part of their lifetime and yet have been there to offer their support throughout it all.

As they go through the motions of growing up and feeling as though life is out to get them. Scared of their future and outcome of what might happen if they get it all wrong. These five girls banded together to create a piece that represents them. That represents their culture and longing for a life that feels out of their control. Five girls who were once strangers grew up alongside each other. Sharing laughs alongside tears, made up dances in random places, 16th and 17th birthdays, fighting for swing sets, karaoke on the side of the street, and hopefully many more summers to come.

And hopefully, throughout the mess and joy that is this play you’ll be able to not only see our characters but us as well. With three of our own soon off to college and the scary yet exciting part of 18. Three girls that go by the name of Perla, Renata, and Jazmine. Three girls that have seen GirlSpeak grow into what it is now. Performing in actual theaters and stages, simply trying to get the words in their heart out in the world.
