What My Hands Have Touched

2003 saw the creation and premiere of our second original production, WHAT MY HANDS HAVE TOUCHED, which premiered in NYC shortly after the U.S. invaded Iraq for the second time in a generation. As we performed a play about women's contributions to the war effort during World War II, we were watching a very different kind of war unfold in real time. To create this play, we had spent many months researching about the experiences of U.S. women during World War II. We interviewed family members and friends, we read books and articles, we watched documentaries, and we read old letters. Then we got in the rehearsal room together and started collaboratively created this new play. The NYC premiere was a 5 person ensemble piece.  In this piece, just as in CROSSING MOUNTAINS, the LFL aesthetic began to emerge and take shape. In both plays, there was a 5-actor ensemble playing dozens of roles of various ages and genders each, and there were many movement pieces and more poetic pieces peppered in with realistic scenes and monologues, based on first person accounts. After the NYC run of the show, in which all 3 co-founders performed, we created a 3 person version of the play to tour in Kentucky and Wisconsin, and eventually many other cities throughout the years. That version was premiered with Shannon Woolley Allison, Trina Fischer and Kelly McNerney (who had become a company member in 2002).  Since then, there have been various excerpted versions and full-length versions created and toured, most notably  - a 3 person version with the 3 co-founders, a shorter revised 3 person version with Shannon Woolley Allison, Jennifer Thalman Kepler and Ebony Jordan, and a ONE person excerpt performed by Shannon!
