Young women telling their stories their way
LFL has commissioned a brand new script by Nancy Gall-Clayton, I’m Wearing My Own Clothes!, inspired by Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919), a surgeon for the Union during the Civil War. Walker remains the only woman awarded the Medal of Honor. She earned her medical degree at 22, wore trousers at her wedding, in surgery, and everywhere else, finding corsets and hoop skirts impractical and unhygienic. She was arrested numerous times for “wearing men’s clothes.” She also advocated for voting rights for women and equality in marriage and the workplace. She lectured on both sides of the Atlantic and frequently lobbied in Washington, D.C., and Albany, New York.
I’m Wearing My Own Clothes will feature company member Dawn Schulz Campbell, returning to the LFL stage from Nevada for the first time in four years. She is joined by Mandi Hutchins and Ted Lesley, both returning to the LFL stage, and Erica McClure and Casey Moulton, who are performing with LFL for the first time. Co-Artistic Director Kathi E.B. Ellis directs.

A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT
It all began at Quill’s on Bardstown Road over a cup of coffee with Kathi E.B. Ellis. Looking for Lilith Theatre Company had decided to commission a new play for its 15th Anniversary Festival. Would I be interested? Yes, of course! I was permitted to choose any subject matter I desired. Knowing the company’s mission and history, I looked for an historic woman who was not well known but who had accomplished something significant related to women’s rights. It was off to the library and to (of course) the internet. Within weeks of that July 26, 2016, meeting at Quill’s, I had settled on Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. However, the more I learned, the more dubious I became: The play would require many characters (27!) and many scenes (20!) to tell the story I wanted to tell. “No problem,” Kathi told me, “Lilith can handle it.” At the first read-through in April, I began to see that Kathi was right. With her splendid direction and the amazing work of the actors she chose, Dr. Walker will come to life in “I’m Wearing My Own Clothes!”. I hope you enjoy it. -Nancy Gall-Clayton
