Just Like Us

4 young Latinas navigate Life, Love & the Pursuit of their American Dreams within the shadow of their legal statuses

Looking for Lilith Theatre Company (LFL) and Teatro Tercera Llamada (TTLL) produce the regional premiere of Karen Zacarías’ Just Like Us.  Based on Helen Thorpe’s book of the same name, Just Like Us dramatizes the lives of four Latinas in Denver – two of whom have papers, two of whom do not – as they navigate school and college, friends and romances, all within the shadow of their statuses. Peopled with rich characterizations of real people, this script gives bilingual, Spanish-speaking, and English-speaking performers opportunities for complex, and sometimes controversial, roles that will resonate with many communities in the greater Louisville area.

LFL and TTLL have brought together an acting company and production team that is representative of both companies and their work in the Louisville theatre community. With eleven performers, this production is the largest production in either of the companies’ histories. A script that ranges widely around the Denver area means that design will incorporate projections as well as traditional scenic elements.

Embracing TTLL’s practice of providing supertitles that make productions accessible to both English and Spanish speaking audiences, this English-language-with-Spanish production will have supertitles in each language as appropriate. LFL’s traditional Monday evening community night performance with all tickets at $11, will return for this co-production.
